In the heart of this historic city, Trieste commemorated the valor and sacrifice of Italy’s infantrymen with a grand celebration that underscored both tradition and modern resilience. This event, held against the backdrop of the 70th anniversary of Trieste’s return to Italy and the 400th anniversary of the founding of the first Italian infantry regiment, highlighted the enduring spirit of the nation’s armed forces.

The ceremony, marking the 36th national gathering of the Infantrymen of Italy, commenced with a solemn flag-raising in Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia, setting a reverent tone for the day’s proceedings. The Regional Councillor for Local Autonomies and Security, speaking on behalf of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, delivered a poignant address that captured the essence of the infantrymen’s legacy.

“The Infantrymen represent the beating heart of our Armed Forces,” the Councillor remarked. “With humility and determination, they have defended our borders, maintained peace, and safeguarded our freedom. Today, they continue to protect our security. Trieste, with its storied past and strategic significance, is the perfect setting for this celebration.”

Trieste, a city that has witnessed profound historical upheavals and rebirths, serves as a fitting venue for such a commemoration. Its streets, once scenes of great tension and suffering, now thronged with veterans and active-duty soldiers, embodying a spirit of resilience and forward-looking optimism. This spirit mirrors that of the infantrymen, who have risen time and again from the ashes of conflict.

Following the Councillor’s address, Gaetano Zaule, Commander of the Land Operational Forces, conveyed greetings from the Chief of Staff of the Army. His words resonated deeply, reflecting the profound respect and gratitude felt by the nation for these soldiers.

The ceremony continued with a vibrant parade along the Rive, culminating in Piazza del Ponterosso. Here, amidst the cheers of onlookers, the parade showcased the proud history and contemporary might of the Italian infantry. The day’s events concluded with a solemn flag-lowering ceremony back in Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia, bringing the commemoration full circle.

“The history of the Infantrymen is intertwined with that of our nation,” the Councillor noted. “From the bloodiest battles to peace missions in distant lands, each infantryman bears the weight of a glorious tradition. We thank them for always demonstrating the values of volunteerism and assistance, both in active service and in retirement.”

This commemoration, particularly significant in this landmark year, served not only as a tribute to the past but also as a beacon of hope for the future. Trieste, with its unique blend of historical gravitas and contemporary vitality, provided a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made and the enduring spirit of Italy’s armed forces.
