In response to a confirmed case of dengue fever, the Municipality of Trieste has announced a series of preventive measures aimed at controlling the mosquito population and preventing further spread of the disease. The initiative will commence this evening, Monday, May 27, at 7:00 PM, with extensive disinfestation efforts in a specified area.
The affected zone, extending from Via Catullo to Giardino Pubblico De Tommasini, within a 200-meter radius, will undergo a rigorous treatment. This action follows the confirmation of a dengue case by the A.S.U.G.I. Department of Prevention, S.C. Hygiene and Health. The municipality has issued an ordinance, signed by Mayor Roberto Dipiazza, to facilitate these measures.
Residents and businesses within the outlined area are advised to adhere to specific guidelines for the duration of the disinfestation process. Notices with detailed instructions will be posted in the vicinity. The directive affects residents, condominium administrators, commercial operators, and anyone with access to outdoor spaces.
The evening’s operations will commence with a larvicidal treatment at 7:00 PM, followed by an adulticidal intervention at approximately 8:00 PM. The appointed company will carry out these treatments, aiming to eliminate mosquito larvae and adult mosquitoes.
In the following weeks, ongoing compliance with preventive measures is mandatory. The municipality has outlined several critical actions to prevent mosquito breeding, including eliminating standing water from containers, treating water in drains and collection pits, maintaining clean and dry outdoor areas, and using larvicidal products where necessary. Residents are also advised to keep pets indoors during the treatment and to protect their shelters and feeding stations.
During the disinfestation, from around 7:30 PM to 10:30 PM, traffic will be restricted in several streets to ensure safety. The affected streets include Via Catullo, Via Tibullo, Vicolo dell’Ospitale Militare, Via Fabio Severo, Via Papiniano, Via del Coroneo, Via Stoppani, Via del Ronco, Via Pietro Nobile, Via Alessandro Volta, Via Guglielmo Marconi, Via Carpison, and Via San Francesco d’Assisi. Emergency vehicles and law enforcement will be exempt from these restrictions.
The municipality has provided detailed guidelines to manage the aftermath of the disinfestation, including cleaning outdoor furniture and children’s toys exposed to the treatment. Residents are urged to wash any skin that comes into accidental contact with the insecticide.
This decisive action by Trieste authorities underscores the serious approach to controlling the mosquito population and preventing further cases of dengue, ensuring the health and safety of its residents.
