The Revoltella Museum in Trieste is set to host two free events as part of Italy’s national campaign “Il Maggio dei Libri” (May of Books), which aims to underscore the societal value of books as pivotal for personal, cultural, and civic growth. This year, the campaign, promoted by the Center for Books and Reading, marks its fourteenth edition with the theme “If You Read, You Are Free,” celebrating reading as a tool for knowledge and awareness.
The first event, a guided tour of Pasquale Revoltella’s travel books, will take place on Tuesday, May 28, at 5 p.m. at the “Sergio Molesi” Art Library within the Revoltella Museum, located on Via Diaz 27. The tour will be led by Federica Moscolin, a librarian at the museum.
Participants will gather in the “Baronial Library” to explore the captivating illustrations in selected travel books from Revoltella’s collection, which comprises 1,800 volumes. The tour will conclude in the modern “Sergio Molesi” Art Library, home to approximately 28,000 books, magazines, and pamphlets, available for scholars and enthusiasts interested in 19th and 20th-century art.
The second event, titled “Art Readings for Children Dedicated to Yayoi Kusama,” is scheduled for Thursday, May 30, at 5 p.m., also at the “Sergio Molesi” Art Library. This session will focus on the celebrated artist Yayoi Kusama, who, after leaving Japan post-World War II, built her artistic career in the United States. Known for her polka dots and Infinity Rooms, Kusama has become one of the most iconic artists of our time.
Federica Moscolin will conduct the readings, which will include a careful and critical examination of Kusama’s artworks. Following the readings, children will have the opportunity to create drawings inspired by the stories and borrow books from the library’s extensive children’s art section, which boasts over 1,100 titles. The event is designed for children aged 6-10, and adult accompaniment is not required.
Both events are free, but advance booking is mandatory. Interested individuals can reserve their spots by emailing Federica Moscolin at federica.moscolin@comune.trieste.it.
