In a significant move to enhance the allure of Friuli Venezia Giulia as a prime tourist destination, regional authorities have unveiled a comprehensive renovation plan for the Terrazza a Mare, one of the region’s most iconic structures. This ambitious project was announced during a ceremony in the bustling seaside town of Lignano Sabbiadoro.
Governor Massimiliano Fedriga, speaking at the event, emphasized the strategic importance of this investment. “This initiative is not merely about maintaining and modernizing an existing building; it represents a forward-looking vision for the future of tourism in Friuli Venezia Giulia,” he said. The $15 million (€14 million) renovation aims to elevate the tourist experience, further solidifying the region’s status as a premier summer destination.
The project is set to commence immediately, focusing on a blend of seismic, energy, and functional upgrades. Plans include the construction of an infinity pool at the end of the pier and the eastward extension of the open promenade area, which will feature a beach club and restaurant. This phase of the project will involve complex construction work, slated to be minimally disruptive, with the bulk of activities scheduled during the off-season from October to June.
Regional councilor Sergio Emidio Bini, overseeing Productive Activities and Tourism, highlighted the complexity of the project, which is expected to be completed by the summer of 2026. “This project has required a significant collaborative effort,” Mr. Bini noted, referencing the joint work of multiple regional departments and the Municipality of Lignano.
The tender for the renovation was awarded to Setten Genesio Spa, a well-regarded construction firm based in Veneto. Detailed plans outline a holistic approach to the refurbishment, including structural safety improvements, energy efficiency upgrades, and aesthetic enhancements to ensure the facility meets the highest standards.
Key features of the renovation include enhancing the pedestrian pathways through the tunnel to restore the visual connection to the sea. The smaller shell structure will continue to house conference and event spaces, while the main building will be revamped to include a bar, restaurant, and additional facilities, suitable for exhibitions and meetings.
The initial phase will address the areas around the entrance tunnel and the existing Terrazza a Mare structure, with interior demolition and refurbishment works set to begin immediately. The expansion to the beach and marine areas will follow the end of the current tourist season.
Governor Fedriga expressed optimism about the project’s impact on local tourism. “This investment will make one of our most visited seaside resorts even more attractive to visitors, enhancing their experience and encouraging longer stays,” he said.
With a targeted completion date before the summer of 2026, the revamped Terrazza a Mare is poised to welcome visitors in a modern, more functional form, embodying the region’s commitment to sustainable and high-quality tourism development.
