In the charming coastal city of Trieste, a hidden gem is set to welcome nature enthusiasts and history buffs alike. On Thursday, May 30, 2024, at 5:30 PM, the Bioest association invites the public to join Massimiliano “Max” Saule for an enlightening walk through the historic Via Modiano Park. Saule, a passionate botanist and the head of the Friuli Venezia Giulia section of A.Di.P.A., will lead participants on a journey titled “Walk in the Via Modiano Park to Discover Nature.”

This verdant enclave, with its rich past and natural splendor, offers a unique glimpse into the botanical and cultural heritage of the region.

A Garden Through the Ages

The park’s origins date back to 1807, when Pietro Sartorio, an esteemed local figure, envisioned and created a Venetian-style garden. Sartorio’s vision materialized through the construction of a stately portal, a grand staircase, statues, and a delightful gazebo, often filled with the melodies of live music.

The garden’s evolution did not stop there. Giovanni Guglielmo, Pietro’s son, later reimagined the space, transforming it into an English Romantic garden. This period of enhancement infused the area with a picturesque charm, characterized by meandering paths and thoughtfully designed landscapes.

From Private Splendor to Public Utility

In 1911, the entire estate transitioned into public hands when it was acquired by the Municipality of Trieste. It served as the headquarters for the Anti-Tuberculosis Preventorium, marking a significant chapter in its history. The 1950s saw the addition of two new buildings, further altering the park’s landscape and leading to its eventual closure to the public.

However, recent renovations have breathed new life into this historic site. A portion of the park has been reopened, now featuring rest areas and a playground, making it an inviting retreat for families and visitors.

A Living Testament to Nature

Today, Via Modiano Park stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of historical architecture and natural beauty. The park’s design skillfully alternates between enclosed and open spaces, fostering an engaging visual experience. Low undergrowth vegetation contrasts with towering trees and curvilinear paths, creating dynamic perspectives and a sense of depth.

Among the park’s treasures are forty species of impressive and valuable trees, including monumental oaks and Aleppo pines. These arboreal giants underscore the park’s commitment to preserving its natural heritage.

Embracing the Future

In addition to its recreational areas, the park also hosts the municipal gardening service, which operates from a historic greenhouse within the grounds. This facility, steeped in history, is accessible to visitors upon request, offering a glimpse into the ongoing efforts to maintain and celebrate the park’s botanical legacy.

As Massimiliano Saule leads attendees through this revitalized sanctuary, participants will not only discover the beauty of nature but also the rich tapestry of history woven into the fabric of Via Modiano Park. This event, part of a series curated by the Bioest association, promises to be an enriching experience for all who attend.
