In an effort to address the complex intersections of faith, politics, and society, a notable roundtable discussion titled “Religions and Europe” is scheduled to convene on Thursday, May 30, 2024. Set to commence at 5:30 PM local time, the event will be hosted at the Conference Hall of the Department of Humanities Studies at the esteemed University of Trieste, situated at Androna Campo Marzio 10.

The initiative, organized by the University of Trieste, aims to foster a platform for reflection and dialogue among representatives of the three major Abrahamic religions — Judaism, Christianity, and Islam — alongside three distinguished philosophers specializing in religious experience, rights, and politics.

With Europe’s historical significance as a melting pot of civilizations and, at times, a stage for violent conflicts spurred by religious or political ideologies, the discussion holds timely relevance. Against the backdrop of contemporary challenges marked by secularism and radicalism, the speakers will delve into the potential contributions of religious perspectives toward shaping a prosperous and peaceful European future.

The roundtable serves as a fitting conclusion to the “History of Religions” course offered by the University of Trieste for the academic year 2023-24, forming an integral part of the curriculum for the Bachelor’s Degree in Historical and Philosophical Disciplines. Throughout the course duration, students had the privilege of learning from esteemed figures representing diverse religious traditions, including a Catholic priest, an imam, and a rabbi.

Among the notable speakers slated to contribute are:

  • Alexander Meloni, Chief Rabbi of the Jewish Community of Trieste and Friuli Venezia Giulia
  • Valerio Muschi, Diocesan Delegate for Ecumenism and Interreligious Dialogue of Trieste
  • Sergio Ujcich, representing the Islamic Cultural Center of Trieste and Friuli Venezia Giulia
  • Fulvio Longato, esteemed Professor of the History of Philosophy at the University of Trieste
  • Gian Giacomo Vale, esteemed Lecturer in the History of Political Doctrines at the Department of Humanities Studies.

Guiding the discourse as the event’s chairperson is Alessandra Cislaghi, Coordinator of the Bachelor’s Degree in Historical and Philosophical Disciplines.

The event welcomes participation from all interested individuals. For further inquiries and registration, please contact: acislaghi@units.itcoordinamento.stofil@units.it.

As the global landscape continues to evolve, initiatives like the “Religions and Europe” roundtable serve as crucial forums for dialogue and understanding, paving the way for a more inclusive and harmonious society.
