In an era where urban satisfaction is a key measure of quality of life, Trieste stands out among Italian cities. Alongside Trento, Cagliari, Bergamo, Brescia, and Bolzano, over 90% of Trieste’s residents declare they are pleased with their life in the city, according to a recent study by the European Commission.

This finding emerges from the research on the quality of life in European cities, conducted by the European Commission in collaboration with Istat, Italy’s national institute of statistics. The study surveyed a selection of cities across Europe, offering a comprehensive look into urban living conditions, and the results are enlightening for Italy.

For the year 2023, the satisfaction levels in the surveyed Italian cities are notably high, with over 80% of residents expressing contentment with their city life. However, there are significant variations. Taranto records the lowest satisfaction at 47.8%, while Trento achieves a remarkable 95.4%, placing it at the top of the European ranking out of 85 cities.

Despite these high satisfaction rates, the research reveals a concerning trend: a relatively small proportion of Italians believe that their quality of life has improved over the past five years. Bari and Messina are notable exceptions, where residents have a more optimistic outlook on recent improvements.

Healthcare services see the highest satisfaction in northern Italy and the lowest in the southern regions, reflecting long-standing regional disparities. Public transportation, a critical component of urban life, garners less satisfaction from Italians compared to their European counterparts, indicating a pressing area for improvement.

Education, on the other hand, receives positive reviews, with both Italian and European city dwellers expressing contentment with their schools. Yet, street cleanliness remains a significant issue within Italian cities, marking it as a crucial area needing attention.
