As the sun sets behind the majestic Miramare Castle, music enthusiasts will be treated to an evening of Rachmaninov’s most evocative compositions. This enchanting event, set against the castle’s historic backdrop, promises to be a memorable celebration of one of Russia’s most beloved composers on Sunday, 16 June.

The evening’s program features selections that showcase the profound beauty and emotional depth of Rachmaninov’s oeuvre. Among the highlights is “Vocalise,” a piece renowned for its expressive clarity and melancholic beauty. This composition, one of the 14 Romances Op. 34, has been masterfully arranged for strings by F. Fani, offering a fresh interpretation of the timeless classic.

The centerpiece of the concert is Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto, Op. 18, arguably his most famous work. This concerto not only exemplifies Rachmaninov’s extraordinary melodic inventiveness but also reflects his remarkable ability to craft extended musical narratives from minimal thematic material. What makes this concerto particularly intriguing is its origin story. Composed after a three-year period of deep depression during which Rachmaninov could hardly write, the work is dedicated to Dr. Dahl, the physician who helped him overcome this challenging phase. The concerto marked a triumphant return to creativity for Rachmaninov and solidified his status as a preeminent composer of his time.

The concert, organized by the Tartini Conservatory, features performances by pianist Andrea Virtuoso and conductor David Kulikov, alongside the Conservatory Strings.

Program:

  • Vocalise, from 14 Romances Op. 34 (arr. F. Fani for strings)
  • Second Piano Concerto, Op. 18 (arr. A. Virtuoso for piano and strings)
    1. Moderato
    2. Adagio sostenuto
    3. Allegro scherzando

The event will commence at 7:30 PM, with the performance lasting approximately one hour. Following the concert, attendees are invited to visit the “Kosmos: The Ship of Knowledge” exhibition, which will be open until 11 PM.

For those wishing to attend, reservations are being handled by the Tartini Conservatory and can be made by calling 0406724911.

This sunset concert is poised to be a splendid confluence of natural beauty and musical genius, a perfect homage to Rachmaninov’s enduring legacy.
