The Municipality of Trieste is enacting sweeping disinfestation measures in the area surrounding Via Baiamonti following the confirmation of a dengue fever case. The preventive operations, slated to begin in the early hours of June 10, aim to curb the spread of the mosquito-borne illness through rigorous interventions.
Beginning at approximately 4:00 a.m. on June 10, weather permitting, the vicinity of Vicolo della Salvia and Via Salvi will be the focus of an extensive disinfestation effort, covering a 200-meter radius. This measure comes in response to a confirmed dengue case by the Department of Prevention at the University Health Authority of Giuliano-Isontina (A.S.U.G.I.).
Mayor Roberto Dipiazza has signed an ordinance to facilitate the eradication of mosquito breeding sites. Residents, businesses, and property managers within the affected area are urged to adhere strictly to the instructions posted around the neighborhood and provided by health officials.
The disinfestation process involves both adulticide treatments, which will commence during the night of June 9, and larvicide interventions to follow. The Municipality emphasizes the importance of ongoing preventive measures to hinder the re-emergence of mosquito breeding sites.
Stringent Preventive Measures
Residents and those responsible for outdoor spaces are instructed to:
- Prevent the accumulation of stagnant water in any containers, including those on terraces and balconies.
- Regularly empty and clean containers under their control to prevent water collection.
- Cover water containers with mosquito nets or tight-fitting lids if not emptied weekly.
- Treat private sewers, drain grids, and rainwater collection wells with effective larvicides.
- Maintain clean yards and open areas free of debris and overgrowth to avoid water stagnation.
- Regularly mow grass to prevent mosquito nesting.
- Empty unused pools and treat fountains with larvicides.
- Arrange materials and containers to prevent water collection in the event of rain.
- Store tires under cover or protect them with waterproof sheets.
During the disinfestation treatment, which is anticipated to occur between 4:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. on June 10, residents are advised to remain indoors, close windows and doors, and suspend air exchange systems. Pets should be kept inside, and their supplies should be covered. Any fruits or vegetables in gardens should be harvested or protected with plastic sheets.
Post-Treatment Recommendations
Following the treatment, residents should:
- Clean outdoor furniture, children’s toys, and other items exposed to the treatment using washable or disposable gloves.
- Wash thoroughly with soap and water in case of accidental contact with the insecticide.
Traffic Restrictions and Exemptions
To ensure the disinfestation process proceeds safely, the ordinance includes a temporary ban on vehicle traffic within the designated area. The affected streets include Via Isola d’Istria, Via Lussinpiccolo, Via Pisino, Via Orsera, Via Capodistria, Via Norma Cossetto, Via Pirano, Via Umago, Via Cittanova d’Istria, Via Baiamonti, Via di Silvula, Vicolo della Salvia, Via Ercolano Salvi, Via Pinguente, Via del Roncheto, Via Paolo Giacometti, and Via Claudio Pulcro.
Exemptions will be granted for emergency vehicles, law enforcement, and those directly involved in the disinfestation operations.
As Trieste takes decisive action against this health threat, residents are called upon to support these efforts to ensure public safety and prevent further spread of dengue fever.
