In a remarkable medical achievement, Flavia Alvaro has become Italy’s oldest mother at the age of 63. Alvaro gave birth to a healthy baby boy named Sebastian on Monday, following fertility treatment in Ukraine. The delivery, performed via caesarean section, took place at the Versilia hospital in Lido di Camaiore, located in northwest Italy.
Sebastian was born prematurely at 31 weeks and four days, weighing just under two kilograms. Despite his early arrival, both mother and son are reported to be in good health. The Florence-based newspaper La Nazione first reported on this extraordinary event.
“She wanted this baby very badly and flew to Ukraine twice,” said Andrea Marsili, Alvaro’s gynecologist, in an interview with La Nazione. “On the first attempt about two years ago, Flavia miscarried at the 14th week.”
Describing Alvaro as a “stubborn woman,” Marsili detailed to Corriere della Sera that she organized the trips to war-torn Ukraine “completely independently,” without informing him until her return to Italy.
The path to motherhood was not easy for Alvaro. Her first pregnancy ended in miscarriage, a devastating setback. Yet, her determination saw her through to a successful second attempt. Marsili noted that the second pregnancy was relatively uneventful until Monday, when a sudden rise in Alvaro’s blood pressure necessitated an emergency C-section.
The fertility treatment, conducted in Ukraine, reportedly cost Alvaro around €15,000, excluding additional travel and bureaucratic expenses.
Sebastian will remain in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit until doctors deem him ready to go home. There, he will be welcomed not only by his mother but also by his 93-year-old grandmother.
This birth underscores the lengths to which some will go to achieve their dreams of parenthood, challenging traditional notions of age and fertility. Flavia Alvaro’s story is a testament to resilience and the advances in medical science that make such dreams possible.
