In a decisive outcome that reaffirms its dominant position, Brothers of Italy has emerged as the leading party in the recent European elections, securing a substantial share of the vote. Meanwhile, the Democratic Party (PD) has pulled ahead of its competitors, setting the stage for a close race between the League and Forza Italia.

The counting of the ballots began promptly at 11 PM, marking the start of the process to elect Italy’s 76 representatives to the European Parliament. Across Europe, right-wing and sovereigntist parties have seen a notable surge in support within the Euro Parliament. However, this shift appears to fall short of disrupting the existing parliamentary balance.

The elections also encompassed local administrative contests in 114 municipalities in Friuli Venezia Giulia and 309 in Veneto. Preliminary results indicate a clear lead for several mayors in Friuli Venezia Giulia and those who have achieved the quorum in Veneto. With 1,357 out of 1,358 sections scrutinized, the current standings in Friuli Venezia Giulia are as follows:

  • Brothers of Italy (Fdi) – 33.99%
  • Democratic Party (PD) – 20.98%
  • League Salvini Premier – 14.92%
  • Forza Italia – Noi Moderati – 7.6%
  • Green and Left Alliance (Avs Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra) – 6.11%
  • Five Star Movement (Movimento 5 Stelle) – 5.42%

In the North-East constituency, traditionally a stronghold for the League, particularly in Veneto, Brothers of Italy has garnered approximately 30 percent of the vote. Giorgia Meloni, the party’s prominent leader, emerged as the most favored candidate in this region. The Democratic Party follows closely with 25-26 percent, bolstered by the influential governor of Emilia Romagna, Stefano Bonaccini. Bonaccini’s performance significantly outpaced that of General Vannacci, who was expected to drive support for the League. The League, however, has suffered a dramatic decline, falling below the 10 percent threshold.

This outcome represents a stark contrast to the party’s performance in the last general elections, with Salvini’s party now trailing even the Green and Left Alliance, which stands between 6 and 7 percent. Forza Italia and the Five Star Movement both find themselves with support ranging between 5 and 6 percent, rounding out the lower end of the spectrum.

As the final results are tallied, the political landscape in Italy and across Europe may face significant shifts, though the fundamental balance of power within the European Parliament remains largely intact.
