On Wednesday, June 12, the city of Trieste will solemnly mark the anniversary of its liberation from Yugoslav occupation, an event etched in the memory of its residents as a period of hardship and sacrifice.
The day, known locally as the “Day of Liberation of the City of Trieste from Yugoslav Occupation,” will be observed with a series of ceremonies and events organized by the Municipal Administration.
The Yugoslav occupation, often referred to as the “40 days,” is remembered for the atrocities that occurred during that time — arrests, killings, and deportations carried out by the secret police. These dark chapters in Trieste’s history were recently recognized in the awarding of the Gold Medal for Military Valor to the city, acknowledging its resilience in the face of adversity.
In accordance with a resolution passed by the Municipal Council in May 2020, designating June 12 as a solemn city anniversary, the day’s program includes:
- 9:15 am: A Solemn Commemoration in the Council Chamber
- 10:00 am: Flag-raising ceremony in Piazza Unità d’Italia
- 10:45 am: Wreath-laying ceremony at the Remembrance Park to honor those who perished
- 6:00 pm: Solemn flag-lowering ceremony in Piazza Unità d’Italia
The city’s highest authorities will be in attendance, underscoring the significance of this day in Trieste’s history. The presence of the City Gonfalon will symbolize the unity and resilience of its residents in the face of adversity.
