In a notable stride towards sustainable urban development, the city of Trieste unveiled its first set of solar-powered compacting waste bins in Piazza Verdi this morning. The initiative, part of a broader strategy to enhance waste management and recycling, was inaugurated by Michele Babuder, Councilor for Territorial Policies, and Massimo Buiatti, Director of Environmental Services at AcegasApsAmga.
“This morning, together with AcegasApsAmga, we present the first series of compacting containers in the city,” said Babuder. “This project, supported by European PNRR funds, marks the beginning of many innovations involving the citizens and the Municipal Administration in waste disposal.”
The initiative will see the installation of 81 additional bins across the historic center in the coming weeks. The new bins are designed to significantly improve the city’s recycling capabilities and overall waste management services.
The project, launched at the end of 2021, aims to boost recycling rates to 60% by 2027. Buiatti explained that the bins are equipped with advanced technology allowing them to compress waste, effectively increasing their capacity from 125 liters to 840 liters — equivalent to the capacity of seven traditional bins. “Thanks to PNRR funding, by the end of June, three compacting bins will be installed at each of the 27 locations in the city center, totaling 81 units,” Buiatti noted.
Each set comprises three compacting bins dedicated to non-recyclable waste, plastic, and paper. An additional traditional bin for glass will be added in the coming weeks to complete the set, ensuring a uniform aesthetic.
These solar-powered bins represent a significant leap in urban waste management technology. Self-powered through solar energy, they require no external power source. The bins are also connected to a cloud platform, enabling real-time management, monitoring of fill levels, and prompt intervention in case of anomalies.
The benefits of these new bins extend beyond environmental impact. They are expected to improve the quality of public spaces by preventing overflow, reducing unpleasant odors, and enhancing the efficiency of waste collection routes. This, in turn, could positively affect tourism, presenting a cleaner and more appealing cityscape.
