On the evening of June 21, the historical Mitreo Cave near the Forest Station of Duino Aurisina will open its ancient doors to celebrate the Summer Solstice. This evocative site, once a sacred space for Roman legionaries, promises an immersive experience woven with threads of history, astronomy, and geology.
Organized by the Flondar Speleological Group in collaboration with the Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape Superintendence of Friuli Venezia Giulia, this event aims to offer a window into the past, blending scholarly insights with natural beauty.
A Historical Journey
Participants will embark on a guided tour, led by seasoned experts, that highlights the cave’s storied past. The tour begins with a historical guide who will detail the rituals performed by Roman soldiers within the cave’s cool, shadowed confines. This narrative promises to bring to life the rich tapestry of Roman religious practices.
Next, an astronomy guide will take center stage, elucidating the significance of the summer solstice. Attendees will learn how ancient cultures revered this astronomical event, marking it with celebrations that honored the sun’s zenith.
The evening concludes with a geological perspective, as a guide explains the karst phenomena responsible for the cave’s formation. This exploration will underscore the cave’s unique status as both a natural wonder and a historical sanctuary.
Practical Information
The entire excursion, including the guided tour and educational talks, will last about two hours. Given the challenging terrain of the final path to the cave, attendees are advised to wear comfortable footwear and long pants to guard against ticks. It is also recommended to bring a flashlight for the journey back.
While the event is free and open to the public, it is not advised for very young children or pets, to ensure the safety and comfort of all participants. Due to the event’s special nature and limited space, reservations are highly recommended.
The Summer Solstice celebration at Mitreo Cave is a unique opportunity for enthusiasts of history, nature, and astronomy. It promises to offer not only educational insights but also a profound connection to ancient traditions and the natural world.
