This weekend, Trieste will once again host Boramata, the beloved festival that celebrates the city’s iconic wind, known as the Bora. From Friday, June 21, to Sunday, June 23, the streets of this Adriatic gem will be transformed into a vibrant tapestry of color and culture.
In an exciting twist this year, the festival will extend beyond Trieste, uniting with the mountain community of Tarvisio. This collaboration brings the works of renowned Tarvisio artist Ennio Veluscek to the City of the Bora. Veluscek, a master wood sculptor, will present a three-meter-tall statue of Aeolus, the ruler of the winds, alongside a bench carved from a historic 1858 larch tree, dedicated to the illustrious writer and mountaineer Julius Kugy.
“Boramata is an event of extraordinary significance,” remarked Serena De Simone, Deputy Mayor of Tarvisio. “It transforms the wind of Trieste into a breath of culture and creativity, bringing our communities closer and celebrating the art and beauty of our region. We are proud to participate in an event that showcases Tarvisio’s natural splendor through Veluscek’s remarkable handmade works.”
As part of the festival’s traditional charm, kites will once again dance in the sky, and the iconic pinwheels, crafted by students of Edilmaster, will turn Trieste into a field of color. On Sunday morning, these pinwheels will be distributed to festival-goers in exchange for a donation, with proceeds benefiting the local charity Astad.
This year, a new addition to Boramata is a dedicated play area in the Public Garden of Trieste, offering various activities for families and game enthusiasts. After the weekend festivities, Boramata and its pinwheels will journey to Tarvisio’s Piazza dell’Unità, symbolically connecting the two cities in a vibrant whirl of color.
Organized by Prandicom and supported by the Bora Museum Association, the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, and the municipalities of Trieste and Tarvisio, Boramata explores the myriad expressions of the Bora wind, which embodies the immutable spirit of the city. Federico Prandi, owner of Prandicom, highlighted the festival’s growing appeal, stating, “Many curious visitors come to celebrate our fresh, capricious, and unpredictable hostess. The partnership with Tarvisio is a new opportunity to enrich an event that began with Rino Lombardi, the founder of the ‘Magazzino dei Venti – Museum of the Bora’.”
The unveiling of Veluscek’s works and the complete Boramata program will take place on Friday at 11:30 AM in Piazza Unità. Among the notable events is the evening opening of the Immaginario Scientifico, featuring the exhibition “OTHER TIMES: Witnesses of the Climate.”
