The ninth edition of Boramata opened yesterday, June 21, bringing a breath of creativity and playful energy to Piazza Unità. Featuring 130 pinwheels in various shades of green and the works of Tarvisian artist Ennio Veluscek, the event marks the beginning of a weekend filled with art, culture, and community engagement.
Running through Sunday, June 23, this year’s festival benefits from a new collaboration with the Municipality of Tarvisio, promising a blend of novelty and tradition. The festival offers a variety of activities, including workshops and storytelling sessions at Giardino Pubblico on Via Giulia, and events at the Antico Caffè San Marco, all centered around the iconic Piazza Unità.
Rino Lombardi, the creator of Trieste’s “Warehouse of Winds – Museum of the Bora,” expressed his delight in returning to Piazza Unità. He emphasized the festival’s focus on the playful nature of the wind, using art and games to explore and celebrate this theme. “We are interested in telling the fun side of the wind and exploring its playful aspect,” Mr. Lombardi said.
The festival also serves as a platform to highlight the natural beauty of Tarvisio through Veluscek’s art. Among the pieces on display is a wooden sculpture of Aeolus, the god of wind, and a bench carved from an 1858 larch tree, dedicated to writer and mountaineer Julius Kugy. A discussion on Kugy’s legacy, featuring notable speakers, is scheduled for Saturday at Caffè San Marco.
Boramata is known for transforming Piazza Unità with a vibrant display of kites and pinwheels. This year, Edilmaster students crafted three hundred pinwheels, symbolizing the meadows and mountains of Tarvisio. These installations invite photography enthusiasts to capture and share their beauty using the hashtag #boramata.
Among this year’s highlights is a play area at Giardino Pubblico, offering family-friendly activities. Workshops led by game experts and a kite-making session by Edo Borghetti are scheduled, ensuring engaging experiences for all ages.
The event will also feature a special appearance by kiting enthusiasts Edo Borghetti and Sara Rizzetto, showcasing their giant kites and acrobatic skills on Sunday morning.
Following its conclusion in Trieste, Boramata will extend to Tarvisio, starting July 20, continuing to bridge the two cities with a celebration of wind and color.
