In a week marked by a harmonious blend of art, culture, and social commitment, the 50th Social Week of Italian Catholics is set to captivate Trieste from July 1 to 7. Organized by the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI), this milestone event will culminate in a historic visit from Pope Francis on Sunday, July 7.

A Grand Concert and Cultural Festivities

The week-long celebration promises a rich tapestry of events, headlined by a grand concert titled “At the Heart of Democracy” on July 4. Piazza Unità will come alive at 9:15 PM with performances by iconic Italian musicians Riccardo Cocciante, Roberto Vecchioni, Malika Ayane, Simone Cristicchi, and Amara, accompanied by the FVG Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Leonardo De Amicis.

Classical Music and Theatrical Performances

Beyond the grand concert, the program features an array of prestigious events. On July 3, the Tartini Conservatory Symphony Orchestra, directed by Silvia Massarelli, will perform “Si vitam inspicias hominum,” inspired by the Distichs of Cato. The following day, a double event will focus on social commitment with a theatrical reading about Raoul Follereau and an interview with Paul Bhatti, brother of the martyred Pakistani minister Shahbaz Bhatti.

In a poignant prelude to the papal visit, the European Spirit of Youth Orchestra will perform on July 6 in Piazza Verdi. This ensemble of 17 young musicians from across Europe will play works by Beethoven, Bizet, Britten, and Vivaldi.

Jazz, Folk, and More at San Giusto Castle

San Giusto Castle will host an eclectic mix of performances starting with Perpetuum Jazzile’s “Vocal Ecstasy” on July 1. This renowned vocal orchestra will present a cappella renditions of global pop hits. On July 3, Oscar-winning Irish singer-songwriter Glen Hansard will take the stage, bringing his folk poetry to the historic venue.

An Ode to Cinema and Theater

The 25th ShorTS International Film Festival will run concurrently, showcasing short films from around the world each night at the Giardino Pubblico. Additionally, the “Fuoricentro” series will bring engaging cultural activities to Villa Engelmann, including a botanical animation workshop for children and a diverse musical lineup.

The theatrical scene will not be left behind, with the “Festil – Litorale Festival” presenting thought-provoking pieces. Highlights include “Only When I Work Am I Happy” on July 3 at Teatro dei Fabbri and Giovanni Scifoni’s “Fra, the Medieval Superstar,” a play about St. Francis of Assisi, on July 6 at Teatro Verdi.

A Collaborative Effort

Trieste Estate, the city’s premier summer festival, integrates seamlessly with the 50th Social Week, offering over 300 events until September. This initiative is spearheaded by the Municipality of Trieste, with support from PromoTurismoFVG and collaboration from local cultural bodies.

Artistic directors Gabriele Centis and Lino Marrazzo have curated a program that reflects the festival’s commitment to cultural and social enrichment. For a detailed schedule and further information, visit www.triestestate.it.
