In a bid to alleviate urban congestion and bolster tourism, Trieste has launched a new maritime transport service linking the city center with the picturesque Miramare Castle. The initiative, backed by a 250,000 euro investment from the Regional government, marks a significant expansion in Trieste’s public transport offerings.
The service, operated by Trieste Trasporti and featuring the newly commissioned vessel “Miramar” from Delfino Verde fleet, promises commuters and tourists alike a scenic journey along the Adriatic coast.
Maurizio Marzi, President of Trieste Trasporti, emphasized the service’s innovation: “We are thrilled to introduce this new ferry service tailored for Trieste residents and maritime enthusiasts. For the first time, we are stopping at the Old Port, offering passengers a unique glimpse into our city’s maritime heritage. Stops at Barcola and the popular Topolini ensure comprehensive coverage from downtown.”
The route, conceived after months of planning, launches with five daily round trips, departing from Pescheria Pier at strategic times throughout the day. The journey, taking approximately one hour, includes brief stops at Porto Vecchio, currently under redevelopment, and other key locations like Barcola, Cedas Marina, and Grignano.
Ticket prices range from 3.10 euros to Barcola to 5 euros for a trip to Grignano/Miramare, with discounts available for frequent travelers and residents. The service also accommodates bicycles for a small additional fee, promoting eco-friendly travel options.
Michele Babuder, Assessor of the Municipality of Trieste, praised the collaborative effort between local authorities and Trieste Trasporti: “This new transport service exemplifies successful cooperation between our regional and municipal bodies. By introducing stops at Barcola and Porto Vecchio, we not only provide a novel commuting option but also alleviate congestion on our city’s overburdened bus routes.”
The launch of the Trieste-Miramare route comes amid challenges in the city’s public transport network, including the recent suspension of services to Grado following maritime incidents involving the vessel “Audace.”
