On Tuesday, July 2, 2024, the ShorTS International Film Festival (IFF) will dedicate its fifth day to a diverse array of cinematic experiences, highlighting the breadth and depth of contemporary short filmmaking.

The day begins at 4:30 PM at Teatro Miela, where young audiences will be the focus of the “Kids” block within the Shorter Kids’n’Teens section. This unique “festival within a festival” aims to introduce primary school students from Trieste and Gorizia to the art of short films. Among the ten selected shorts, standout pieces include “Lizzie and the Sea” by Mariacarla Norall, which takes viewers on a journey into the ocean’s depths to confront their fears, and “La notte,” a CSC diploma short that navigates the mysteries of an old Venetian palace under the whimsical guidance of a bumbling Pulcinella. At the end of the screenings, these budding critics will cast their votes to determine the category’s winner.

At 5:00 PM, Sala Xenia will become an epicenter of cutting-edge visual storytelling with the ShorTS Immersive competition section. Featuring seven works — three in 6DoF and four in Cinematic VR — this segment invites attendees to don special headsets for an immersive experience that redefines narrative space. Reservations for this sought-after event can be made at maremetraggio.com.

Cinephiles and city enthusiasts will converge at 5:30 PM for “Esterno/Giorno – Trieste, si gira!,” a guided cinematic tour led by film critic Elisa Grando. This tour offers a unique lens on Trieste, showcasing how the city has doubled as a comic book metropolis, a noir’s perfect backdrop, a contemporary urban landscape, and even the New York of the 1950s. Those interested in this walk through cinematic history can reserve their spots by emailing esternogiorno@casadelcinematrieste.it.

At 7:00 PM, Teatro Miela will host the screening of “Grazie Michele,” a short film by Rosario Errico. This poignant piece, which garnered the 2023 Golden Globe from the foreign press in Italy, will be presented out of competition.

The evening culminates at 9:15 PM in the Public Garden with the third block of the Maremetraggio section. This segment includes “Thirstygirl” by Alexandra Qin, an intriguing tale of two sisters whose life-changing journey captivated audiences at the Sundance Festival 2024. Another highlight is “Titanic, noskhe monaseb baraye khanevadehaye irani” by Farnoosh Samadi, an Iranian author active in Italy. This film, which won the 2024 Silver Ribbon for its advocacy of denied rights in Iran, promises to be a powerful viewing experience.

With such a rich and varied program, the fifth day of ShorTS IFF underscores the festival’s commitment to showcasing innovative and thought-provoking cinema from around the globe.
