In Trieste a bustling scene unfolds as tourists flood the city ahead of a highly anticipated papal visit and amidst a booming summer tourism season. Hotels are fully booked, prices stable, and the city prepares for heightened security measures to ensure a smooth visit for Pope Francis and visitors alike.

Within just 24 hours before the start of the Catholics’ Social Week, which will be inaugurated by President Sergio Mattarella, the city’s hotels are already at capacity. But, locals insist, this bustling atmosphere is no anomaly; business is always brisk in Trieste.

A Summer Tourism Boom

This summer has marked a tourism boom for Trieste, with the city’s accommodations fully booked, a surge attributed to major events and the upcoming papal visit. Notably, there have been no reported price hikes. The Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI) reserved a significant portion of the city center’s hotel rooms as early as last autumn.

Beyond traditional hotels, hundreds of B&Bs, apartments, and guesthouses have sprung up, not just in the city center but throughout Trieste. A quick online search reveals that some accommodations are still available, though many property owners are opting not to rent at this time.

Stable Prices Amid High Demand

Despite the high demand, prices have remained stable. The average cost of a room is 120 euros per night, which is actually 15% less than last year.

Culinary Delights Attract Visitors

Many tourists are also drawn to Trieste to savor its renowned food and wine. The city is famous for its culinary offerings, from fresh seafood to robust local wines, making it a haven for gastronomes.

Security Measures Ahead of Papal Visit

In anticipation of the Pope’s visit, strict security measures are being implemented. From midnight tomorrow until Sunday night, outdoor seating in Piazza Unità will be closed, and breakfasts will be moved indoors to ensure safety.

As Trieste prepares for an influx of visitors and the arrival of Pope Francis, the city’s vibrant, historic charm remains ever-present, continuing to attract tourists from around the globe.
