The Municipality of Trieste has announced extensive traffic restrictions in anticipation of Pope Francis’ visit on Sunday, July 7, 2024. The visit is part of the “50th Social Week of Italian Catholics – At the Heart of Democracy,” which includes a public mass celebrated by the Pope in Piazza Unità d’Italia.
In accordance with Ordinance No. 715-24, local authorities have laid out a series of measures to ensure security and smooth operations during the event. These measures will come into effect at midnight on July 7 and will remain in place until further notice.
Traffic Restrictions:
- Waterfront Ban: Vehicle traffic will be prohibited along key sections of the Trieste waterfront, including Riva Nazario Sauro, Riva del Mandracchio, Riva Caduti per l’Italianità, Riva Tre Novembre, Piazza Duca degli Abruzzi, and Corso Cavour between Piazza Venezia and Via Milano.
- City Center Restrictions: Traffic bans will also affect Via Luigi Cadorna from Via San Giorgio to Via di Mercato Vecchio, and several central streets, including Via Mazzini, Via Genova, Via Nicolò Machiavelli, and Via Valdirivo. Specific stretches between Via Roma and the waterfront will be closed, as well as routes through Piazza Niccolò Tommaseo, Via del Canal Piccolo, Piazza della Borsa, and others leading to the Old Port area.
- Mandatory Turn: Vehicles will be required to make a left turn towards Campo Marzio on Via Felice Venezian.
These measures are implemented under the advisement of the Trieste Police Headquarters and public order officials, aimed at ensuring public safety during the Pope’s visit. The police are authorized to make on-the-spot adjustments to traffic and pedestrian movement as necessary.
Further temporary traffic ordinances may be issued if additional measures are needed, officials said.
The visit by Pope Francis, the first by the pontiff to Trieste in several years, is expected to draw large crowds, with Catholics from across Italy converging on the city. The “50th Social Week of Italian Catholics” is a significant event that focuses on the role of Catholics in democracy, drawing both national and international attention.
