Construction has commenced on new gyms within the sports complex in San Giovanni, a development that aims to enhance local athletic facilities. The project was inaugurated Wednesday morning by Mayor Roberto Dipiazza and Elisa Lodi, the Councillor for Property and Sports Policies. Located at the intersection of Viale Raffaello Sanzio and Via San Cilino, the new facilities are set to address the sporting needs of the Trieste community.
“We have found a reliable company to entrust with the construction, which will provide much-needed gyms to Trieste,” Mayor Dipiazza said.
The sports complex, financed with over 4.3 million euros, is being managed by Costruzioni Virago s.n.c. and C.E.A. scarl, and is expected to be completed within 240 days.
Councillor Lodi highlighted the administration’s commitment to accessibility: “The municipal administration is responding to the needs of the district and the city by offering certified gyms free of architectural barriers. The complex will feature two basketball courts and three volleyball courts, allowing for simultaneous activities thanks to a dividing curtain. The stand will accommodate up to 99 spectators, and there will also be a refreshment area.”
The project also includes the Pinqua initiative, in collaboration with Ater, to create a green area for children in front of the complex, funded by the regional government.
Technical Details and Future Prospects
The existing building, which had served as a municipal tram maintenance depot and later an ACEGAT warehouse, is in good structural condition. Initial structural works, including foundations and the roof, have been completed. The new phase will focus on finishing the construction and installing necessary systems.
The design, by Serteco srl, emphasizes a multifunctional approach, providing facilities suitable for both official games and regular training. The gyms are expected to be certified by sports associations for basketball (FIP) and volleyball (FIPAV), making them suitable for local competitive activities.
Basement Facilities: The basement will be dedicated to athlete services, including spacious changing rooms designed to accommodate disabled individuals, ensuring compliance with inclusive design principles.
Ground Floor Amenities: The ground floor will house the two main gyms, each marked for basketball and volleyball, and feature first aid facilities and storage areas for sports equipment. Public amenities will include restrooms and a vending machine area.
Spectator and Accessibility Features: Spectator capacity is set below 100 to comply with local regulations, with separate entrances and exits ensuring smooth and safe movement. All facilities are designed for universal accessibility.
