In the heart of Trieste, at the verdant expanse of the “Muzio de Tommasini” Public Garden, cinema aficionados are set to enjoy an unparalleled outdoor film experience. The Casa del Cinema, the esteemed curator of cinematic events in Trieste, has launched its much-anticipated “Cinema under the Stars” series, running from July 13 to July 21.
The picturesque Giardino del Cinema arena will host a compelling lineup of films that promise to captivate audiences. The series kicks off on Saturday, July 13, at 9:00 PM with Wim Wenders’ “Perfect Days.” This poignant film, featuring Cannes 2023 Best Actor Kōji Yakusho, explores the poetic quest for beauty in the mundane life of a Tokyo public toilet cleaner.
On Sunday, July 14, viewers will be treated to “Cento domeniche,” a heartfelt narrative directed by and starring Antonio Albanese. This film delves into the trials of an ex-factory worker striving to fund his daughter’s wedding reception, reflecting on the plight of countless small investors devastated by financial greed.
The cinematic journey continues on Monday, July 15, with Yorgos Lanthimos’s celebrated film “Poor Things,” shown in collaboration with the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival. Emma Stone’s award-winning portrayal of Bella Baxter, a woman revived by an unconventional doctor, anchors this tale of transformation and empowerment, a film that triumphed at the Venice Film Festival and secured four Oscars.
Wednesday, July 17, will see the screening of Pedro Almodóvar’s restored classic “Volver,” featuring the stellar performances of Carmen Maura and Penélope Cruz. This film, an homage to the resilience of women amidst adversity, is a testament to Almodóvar’s nuanced storytelling.
The series embraces animation on Thursday, July 18, with Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron.” Presented in collaboration with A.B.C. Associazione per i Bambini Chirurgici del Burlo, this fantastical tale follows 12-year-old Mahito on a journey through realms of life and death, reflecting Miyazaki’s mastery in exploring the mysteries of existence.
Friday, July 19, introduces Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest,” a stark and essential exploration of human nature and evil, recognized with the Grand Prix at Cannes 2023 and the Oscar for Best International Film. The film’s unsettling narrative, centered on Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss and his family’s life adjacent to the concentration camp, offers a chilling reflection on the banality of evil.
Woody Allen’s latest film, “Coup de Chance,” graces the screen on Saturday, July 20. This film delves into the roles of chance and fortune in shaping our lives, as it unravels the seemingly perfect lives of Fanny and Jean, only to be disrupted by a chance encounter with an old acquaintance.
The series concludes on Sunday, July 21, with “Diabolik, Who Are You?,” the final chapter of the Manetti Bros’ Diabolik trilogy. Filmed partially in Trieste, this thriller plunges Diabolik and Inspector Ginko into a desperate situation, while their partners frantically search for them.
