In the picturesque village of Opicina, a storied market will make its return on Thursday, July 18, rekindling a tradition cherished by locals and visitors alike. The event, aptly named “A Well of Opportunities,” is orchestrated by the cultural association “Cose di Vecchie Case,” which celebrated a quarter-century of dedication to preserving and promoting local heritage in 2023.

From the early morning light at 8 a.m. until the last glow of sunset, the streets of Via Nazionale, Strada per Vienna, and Via di Prosecco will come alive with the hustle and bustle of this monthly gathering. Held every third Thursday, the market is a testament to the enduring allure of small antiques, modern collectibles, and artisanal crafts, drawing exhibitors and enthusiasts from across the region.

A Cultural Mosaic

Organized in collaboration with the Municipality of Trieste and the Consorzio Centro in Via Insieme a Opicina, “A Well of Opportunities” is more than just a market; it is a curated exhibition of the region’s rich cultural tapestry. The event forms part of the broader “Discover Opicina… a Summer Evening” 2024 initiative, which seeks to revitalize the karst village, attracting tourists and locals while bolstering the local economy.

The market’s eclectic offerings span the gamut from vintage vinyl records, comics, and miniatures to handcrafted jewelry, decorated plates, and Murano glass. Each stall, housed under elegant gazebos, tells a story of craftsmanship and creativity, promising treasures that cater to all ages and tastes.

A Nod to History

The market’s evocative name harks back to the Zinzendorf Stele, a historical monument at the intersection of Strada per Vienna and Via di Prosecco. This landmark commemorates Karl von Zinzendorf, the Governor of Trieste from 1776 to 1782, who envisioned Opicina as a nexus of trade routes linking Italy to Vienna. His legacy includes a grand commercial road and a post station, with a stone cistern that once provided water to the villagers, a testament to his foresight and ingenuity.

Community and Craftsmanship

The cultural association “Cose di Vecchie Case,” with its 350-strong membership, has been a beacon of community spirit since its founding in 1998. Its events, featuring over 100 exhibitors, have become staples in Trieste and beyond, spanning from Duino-Aurisina to Grado. Their experience extends to organizing musical and children’s events, underscoring a commitment to enriching local culture.

The market’s next installment is scheduled for August 15, weather permitting, with plans to cancel in the event of heavy rain or wind.
