This summer, in the place that symbolizes love more than any other in the region, a unique theatrical event will take center stage. From July 20 to 24, the little port of the Miramare Park will host “Love Speeches to Listen to and Read at Sunset,” a poignant exploration of passion through poetry and letters.

Acclaimed actress Stefania Rocca, alongside Paolo Valerio, Emanuele Fortunati, and Fulvio Falzarano, will lead this evocative production. Each evening at 8:30 PM, these talented performers will breathe life into the delicate and passionate correspondence of literary greats, concluding the “Il Rossetti at Miramare 2024” series. This collaborative effort between the Teatro Stabile del Friuli Venezia Giulia and the Historical Museum of the Park and Castle of Miramare promises to be a highlight of the summer.

The performance will feature love letters and poems that span centuries, including the heartfelt missives from Massimiliano of Habsburg to his beloved Carlotta, and writings by renowned authors such as Marina Tsvetaeva and Rainer Maria Rilke, Henry Miller and Anais Nin, Dino Campana and Sibilla Aleramo. These selections will reveal the private, lesser-known sides of these literary figures, offering audiences a glimpse into their innermost passions and torments.

“Are we still capable of living an intense love story?” muses Paolo Valerio, the director of Teatro Stabile, who has curated this year’s series with the Goethean verse “with a look of infinite love.” He ponders whether modern audiences can still be swept away by feelings, lose control of their hearts, and immerse themselves in the delirium of passion as the poets and writers of old did.

The anticipation of a letter, a ritual foreign to today’s digital natives, is a theme that resonates throughout the performance. In a time when the immediacy of emails and instant messages has replaced the slow burn of awaiting a letter, this production invites the audience to experience the heightened emotions of love through the written word.

The relationships of the cited couples are summarized by Roland Barthes’ timeless definitions from “A Lover’s Discourse: Fragments,” complemented by poems that capture their essence. This synthesis attempts to articulate the inexpressible nature of love, a feat that the production’s creators believe is vital in today’s fast-paced world.

Enhancing the experience will be live music performed by Snezana Acimovic (violin), Enrico Evgenij Zambon (cello), Alessandra Cella (violin), and Emanuele Francesco Ruzzier (cello). Choreographies by Alice Lovrinic will add a further layer of artistic depth to the evenings.

Produced by Teatro Stabile del Friuli Venezia Giulia in collaboration with the Historical Museum and the Park of the Castle of Miramare, “Love Speeches to Listen to and Read at Sunset” is a testament to the enduring power of passion and the written word. Special thanks are extended to Andreina Contessa and Rossana Valier for their contributions.

Tickets are available at the Politeama Rossetti Box Office, various sales points, and the usual circuits of the Teatro Stabile del Friuli Venezia Giulia, including www.ilrossetti.vivaticket.it. For those who prefer spontaneity, last-minute tickets will be sold at the Info Point at the entrance to the Miramare Park one hour before each performance. With prices set at €20 for full tickets and €17 for reduced, advance purchase is strongly recommended to secure a place at this intimate and moving event.
