As the warm embrace of summer envelops the picturesque city of Trieste, the Casa del Cinema di Trieste is poised to captivate audiences with its enchanting “Cinema under the Stars” series. This beloved annual event, held at the Giardino del Cinema within the “Muzio de Tommasini” Public Garden, promises an unforgettable week of cinematic delights from Monday, July 22 to Sunday, July 28.

A Diverse and Captivating Lineup

The week kicks off on Monday, July 22, with a screening of “La sala professori – Das Lehrerzimmer,” directed by Ilker Çatak. This poignant German film, nominated for an Oscar for Best International Feature, will be presented in its original language with subtitles. The evening is a collaboration between Alpe Adria Cinema – Trieste Film Festival and DeutschZentrum Triest.

Tuesday, July 23, offers a special treat with the “SOS Stanlio e Ollio Project – Saving the Italian Versions of Laurel & Hardy’s Films.” In partnership with the Istituto Cinematografico dell’Aquila, the screening of “Avventura a Vallechiara” (Swiss Miss, 1938) featuring the iconic duo Stanlio and Ollio will include a presentation on the restoration efforts by curators Enzo Pio Pignatiello and Paolo Venier. This event is free to the public.

Midweek excitement peaks on Wednesday, July 24, as part of the Triskell Traveling Festival, with the screening of “The Northman,” an epic Viking saga by Robert Eggers. This film, boasting a star-studded cast including Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, and Willem Dafoe, promises an evening of intense cinematic spectacle.

Friday, July 26, sees the thriller “Assassinio a Venezia” grace the big screen. Directed by and starring Kenneth Branagh as the legendary detective Hercule Poirot, this supernatural thriller is based on Agatha Christie’s novel “Poirot and the Massacre of the Innocents.”

The weekend celebrates Italian cinema, starting on Saturday, July 27, with “Gloria!” by Margherita Vicario. Set in an all-female institution in early 19th-century Venice, the film tells the tale of Teresa, a visionary talent, and her band of extraordinary musicians. The film explores themes of rebellion, modernity, and pop culture through the lens of historical fiction.

The series concludes on Sunday, July 28, with “Palazzina LAF,” the directorial debut of Michele Riondino, who also stars alongside Elio Germano. Adapted from Alessandro Leogrande’s “Fumo sulla città,” this film portrays one of Italy’s most severe cases of workplace harassment at the Ilva industrial complex in 1997.
