As part of the “TriesteEstate” summer series, the Municipality of Trieste, in collaboration with the Casa della Musica/Scuola di Musica55, proudly presents the eighteenth edition of the TriesteLovesJazz International Festival. This year’s festival, spanning from June to September, promises 28 captivating events featuring an array of international jazz luminaries.

An Eclectic Jazz Lineup

The festival’s third week is set to enchant jazz aficionados with performances in Piazza Verdi and the Sartorio Museum Park. Noteworthy artists include the Rachel Z Trio and Adam Holzman, both celebrated figures on the global jazz stage.

The festival maintains a tradition of accessibility with all concerts being free of charge, though seating is limited.

A Versatile American Jazz Trio

On Monday, July 22, at 9 p.m. in Piazza Verdi, the Rachel Z Trio, featuring Omar Hakim and Jonathan Toscano, will bring their multifaceted jazz stylings to the stage. Rachel Z, a pianist known for her collaborations with Peter Gabriel, Wayne Shorter, Stanley Clarke, and Marcus Miller, has also released 13 acclaimed albums as a bandleader. Omar Hakim, renowned for his drumming with the legendary Weather Report, has also played with Miles Davis, George Benson, and John Scofield. His versatile career includes session work for Sting, David Bowie, Dire Straits, Céline Dion, Mariah Carey, and Madonna. Joining them is bassist Jonathan Toscano, a significant figure in the New York jazz scene.

Songs from an Unknown Land

Tuesday, July 23, at 9 p.m. in Sartorio, will see the premiere of “Songs from an Unknown Land.” This original project by Klaus Gesing, supported by the Goethe Institut and the European Union, features Ana Pilat on vocals and lyrics. The ensemble includes Gesing on bass clarinet and soprano saxophone, Simone Locarni on piano, Yuri Goloubev on bass, Roberto Dani on drums and percussion, and vocalists Rosa Mussin and Annamaria Varsori. The project explores the union of melodies and words, creating songs that reflect ever-evolving landscapes.

The Italian Band of New Yorker Adam Holzman

On Wednesday, July 24, at 9 p.m. in Piazza Verdi, Adam Holzman and his Italian band, Big Bang Theory, will perform. Holzman, a stalwart of the New York jazz scene, has played with Miles Davis and directed his electric band. His collaborations include Steps Ahead, Michael Petrucciani, Robben Ford, Marcus Miller, Steve Wilson, and Grover Washington. In 2011, he formed Big Bang Theory with Stefano Olivato and Davide Ragazzoni. Their set will feature tracks from Holzman’s latest album “Truth Decay,” alongside Miles Davis compositions and classic rock and jazz standards.

A Cross-Border Quartet

Concluding the week on Thursday, July 25, at 9 p.m. in Sartorio, is the Roberto Magris / Denis Razz – Italian Croatian Quartet. Pianist Roberto Magris, a Trieste native with a forty-year career and over 40 albums, has performed extensively in the United States, including Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, and Chicago. Denis Razz, an alto saxophonist, is a key figure in the Rijeka jazz scene. The quartet also features Vedran Ružić on bass and Rajko Ergić on drums.
