In the heart of Italy, the stage is set for a groundbreaking musical, “Mimma,” which will make its continental premiere at the Verdi Theater in Trieste on Tuesday and Wednesday. This production marks the musical’s first appearance in Europe since its initial performance at Cadogan Hall in London in February 2022.
“Mimma” delves into a largely overlooked chapter of World War II history, focusing on the lives of Italian expatriates in England. The story centers on an Italian journalist named Mimma who, fleeing the turmoil of her homeland, finds sanctuary with a jazz club-owning relative in England. Set against the backdrop of the late 1930s and early 1940s, the musical explores themes of friendship and resilience amidst the war’s upheaval.
Producer Ron Siegmginowski describes “Mimma” as a project with deep historical roots, reflecting a narrative that resonates with both historical significance and artistic ambition. The musical’s complex narrative is enhanced by its diverse genres, promising a rich auditory experience.
The Verdi Orchestra is set to bring the musical’s score to life, having been in rehearsals in the lead-up to the show. The cast features prominent talents including Kelly Mathieson, renowned for her role in “The Phantom of the Opera” at Royal Albert Hall. Also joining the cast are Louise Dearman, celebrated for her performances in West End hits like “Wicked” and “Evita,” and Grant Bickley.
This debut in Trieste offers a unique opportunity for European audiences to engage with a story that intertwines historical narrative with the vibrant energy of musical theatre. As anticipation builds for the performances, “Mimma” promises to be a compelling addition to the theatrical landscape, celebrating both its musical prowess and its historical depth.
