The picturesque region of Friuli Venezia Giulia is once again in the spotlight as it hosts the production of “ESTRANEI,” an upcoming crime series set to air on Rai2. Directed by Cosimo Alemà and featuring a star-studded cast including Elena Radonicich, Ricky Memphis, Marco Cocci, and Isabella Ferrari, the series promises to deliver a gripping narrative across its eight episodes.
With filming already underway since July 19, the region’s allure for filmmakers is evident. After wrapping up scenes in Emilia-Romagna, the production team set up shop in Udine, transforming various city streets into cinematic backdrops. Key locations included via Viola, via Gorgo, and via Magrini, among others. The crew also ventured to Tavagnacco and Cividale del Friuli, capturing the scenic beauty and historic sites of these areas.
Significantly, the former psychiatric hospital on via Pozzuolo has been converted into a bustling set, reminiscent of a mini Cinecittà, the famed film studio in Rome. The filming will continue in Friuli Venezia Giulia until August 5, with the grand finale set to take place in Trieste’s Piazza Unità. Here, the Palazzo della Regione will be reimagined as a bank for the show.
“ESTRANEI” revolves around a small town enveloped in fields and fog, home to one of Europe’s largest Sikh communities. The series kicks off with the disappearance of two lovers—Camilla Ruggeri and Manraj Singh—whose romance disrupts the town’s delicate balance, igniting a chain of violence and hidden truths. The investigation is led by Laura Macchi, a carabiniera who returns to her hometown to care for her ailing father, Mayor Antonio Macchi. As she delves deeper into the case, Laura uncovers unsettling secrets that shake the entire community, revealing that both good and evil are inherent in everyone.
Cosimo Alemà, who transitioned from assistant directing and creating over 700 music videos to film and television, directs the series. His work in commercials has garnered acclaim across Europe, including the Promax and Key Director’s Award. His latest project showcases his talent in weaving complex narratives and compelling visuals.
The Friuli Venezia Giulia Film Commission – PromoTurismoFVG has expressed its gratitude to all involved in bringing “ESTRANEI” to life. Special thanks have been extended to the municipalities of Udine, Cividale, Trieste, and the Friuli Centrale University Health Agency (ASU FC) for their invaluable support.
