Trieste’s Giardino del Cinema, nestled within the lush expanse of the Giardino Pubblico “Muzio de Tommasini,” is transforming into an open-air cinema haven this summer. Curated by the Casa del Cinema of Trieste, this seasonal arena promises a diverse lineup that spans Oscar winners, animated features, and cinematic triumphs from the past year.

A Musical Opener and the Week’s Highlights

The week kicks off with a free musical event on Monday, August 5, featuring the Arcobaleno Wind Orchestra of Trieste. This performance is part of the “Bands in Festival 2024” series, setting a vibrant tone for the days ahead.

The cinematic offerings commence on Tuesday, August 6, with a highly anticipated screening of Kung Fu Panda 4, directed by Mike Mitchell and Stephanie Stine. In this animated sequel, Po, the beloved Dragon Warrior, faces a new challenge as he is destined to become the spiritual leader of the Valley of Peace. The film continues Po’s epic journey as he confronts a formidable new villain, Chameleon, voiced by Viola Davis.

Wednesday, August 7, will see a collaboration with the British Film Club for the presentation of Wicked Little Letters, a British comedy directed by Thea Sharrock. Set in 1922, the film explores a farcical scandal involving two neighbors in a quaint English coastal town who are embroiled in a mystery surrounding a series of obscene anonymous letters. The story, based on true events, unfolds with a mix of humor and intrigue.

The festivities continue on Thursday, August 9, with “Cabaret la plume” featuring Circo Patuf, an event organized by Hangar Teatri, promising a delightful theatrical experience.

Weekend Cinema Extravaganza

The weekend at the Giardino del Cinema promises an array of acclaimed auteur films. On Friday, August 9, the screen will showcase The Taste of Things (La passion de Dodin Bouffant), directed by Trần Anh Hùng. This French film, which won Best Director at Cannes, is set in 1885 and follows the intricate relationship between a master chef and a renowned gastronome, exploring themes of culinary artistry and romance.

Saturday, August 10, features a screening of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. The historical thriller, which secured seven Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director, delves into the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, portrayed by Cillian Murphy. The film examines the paradoxical role of Oppenheimer in the development of the atomic bomb, a story based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book Robert Oppenheimer: The Triumph and Tragedy of the World’s Greatest Scientist.

The weekend concludes on Sunday, August 11, with There’s Still Tomorrow (C’è ancora domani), Paola Cortellesi’s directorial debut. Set in post-war Rome, the film follows Delia (Cortellesi), a wife and mother whose life takes a transformative turn with the arrival of a mysterious letter. The film’s success in Italy, surpassing even Barbie at the box office, marks it as a significant entry in the year’s cinematic landscape.
