In a bid to address the growing digital divide, the City Council of Trieste has unveiled a new Digital Facilitation Office at its Department of Social Services headquarters.

The announcement was made by Massimo Tognolli, the City Councilor for Social Policies, during a press conference held at the department’s central office on Via Mazzini.

The new office aims to provide residents with the necessary skills to navigate the increasingly digital world. Tognolli emphasized that the initiative is part of a broader effort to promote inclusivity, particularly for those who may face technological challenges. “We are at the Social Services headquarters because this department focuses on people, including those with vulnerabilities,” Tognolli said. “This office will address not just physical, mental, or social vulnerabilities, but also the lack of digital skills, which is itself a form of vulnerability.”

Joining Tognolli at the announcement were Alberto Polacco, a City Councilor, and Lorenzo Bandelli, Director of the Department of Innovation and Citizen Services for the Municipality of Trieste. Polacco extended greetings from Sandra Savino, the City Councilor for General Services Policies with a mandate for Technological Innovation and Digital Transition, highlighting that the project is supported by Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) for digital transition.

The Digital Facilitation Office will offer residents assistance with various digital services, including the SPID (Italian digital identity system), the Electronic Identity Card (CIE), and other online Public Administration services such as ANPR (National Register of Resident Population). Tognolli underscored the importance of such services in today’s digital age, noting that acquiring digital skills is crucial for accessing essential public services.

The initiative reflects a commitment by the city to bridge the digital divide and ensure that no one is left behind as services increasingly move online. “In a time when services and information are increasingly available only online, it’s critical to provide everyone with the opportunity to access these resources and develop the necessary skills to use them effectively,” Tognolli said.
