Italy is poised for an unprecedented heatwave this weekend, with meteorologists predicting that temperatures will soar to record-breaking levels across the country. According to weather forecasters, the period from August 10 to August 11 is set to become the hottest weekend of 2024.
Lorenzo Tedici, a meteorologist with ILMeteo.it, confirmed on Tuesday that temperatures will escalate significantly this weekend, Sunday especially. “We are anticipating a rise in temperatures across the board,” Tedici stated. “This will likely result in the hottest weekend of the year, with highs reaching up to 39-40°C in northern regions such as Emilia-Romagna.”
The situation will be even more severe in southern Italy. “In the southern regions, particularly within the internal areas of the major islands, temperatures could climb to between 42-43°C, akin to the sweltering conditions found in Libya and Tunisia,” Tedici added.
As Italians and tourists alike brace for the intense heat, the respite might come around Ferragosto, Italy’s major summer holiday celebrated on August 15. However, for now, the focus remains on coping with the extreme weather.
