The picturesque village of Opicina is gearing up for a vibrant celebration as it hosts the annual San Bartolomeo Apostle Festival from August 19 to 25. The week-long event, introduced at a press conference earlier today, promises a blend of religious ceremonies, musical performances, and community activities.

Held in the scenic area behind the Parish of San Bartolomeo Apostle on Via di Prosecco, the festival will transform the neighborhood into a hub of cultural and social activity. The festival is organized by the Municipality of Trieste in collaboration with the Consortium Centro in Via Insieme a Opicina, the Parish of San Bartolomeo Apostle, and the II District Altipiano Est.

Serena Tonel, Deputy Mayor and Assessor for Economic Policies, highlighted the festival’s significance during the press event. “Opicina continues to use such community anniversaries as opportunities to stimulate local economic and social life. The festival’s success is a testament to the Consortium’s ability to foster inclusive and engaging events that attract both residents and visitors. Opicina’s approach is a model that could benefit other areas of Trieste.”

The festival will commence on Monday, August 19, at 8:00 PM with a performance by acclaimed accordionist Alexander Ipavec, a local favorite, in his traditional Karst courtyard. The week will feature a diverse array of activities, including a mini Chess Tournament on August 20, with free lessons for children and a giant chessboard. Chess enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to participate.

On August 21, the festivities will include a performance by World Champion diatonic accordionist Denis Novato, accompanied by guitarist Walter Bet and bassist Boris Stopar. The performance, scheduled for 8:00 PM, will take place on the church’s back steps and will feature a selection of popular and original pieces.

The festival will also cater to younger attendees with a range of free entertainment options. On August 23 and 24, from 4:30 PM to 9:00 PM, children can enjoy inflatable structures, face painting, and surprises, including complimentary ice cream from Gelateria Arnoldo.

A special highlight of the week will be the outdoor Holy Mass on August 24 at 7:00 PM, celebrated under the Chestnut tree. The bilingual service, conducted in Italian and Slovene, will be followed by a refreshment for attendees.

The festival will conclude on August 25 with a Holy Mass in Slovene at 9:30 AM, followed by a solemn procession around the church.

The San Bartolomeo Apostle Festival offers a unique glimpse into Opicina’s rich cultural tapestry, combining traditional religious observances with modern festivities that engage the entire community.
