Trieste buzzes with energy today as the city celebrates Ferragosto, a key Italian holiday marking the Assumption of Mary and the height of summer. Our team wandered downtown Trieste to see what the city dweller’s are up to today.

On August 15th, Italy celebrates Ferragosto, a national holiday rooted in the Catholic Feast of the Assumption, commemorating the Virgin Mary’s ascent to heaven.

In modern Italy, Ferragosto prompts a mass exodus from cities, with Italians flocking to the countryside and seaside resorts. Public offices and many family-run businesses, restaurants, and shops close for the day, leaving cities like Rome and Milan unusually quiet. While most small enterprises shutter, some larger supermarkets remain open to serve those who stay behind.

Ferragosto remains a cherished tradition, offering Italians a chance to unwind and reconnect with family amidst the country’s scenic landscapes.
