Summer is one of our favorite seasons for style watching in Trieste. Everyone is out and about, and that includes not only locals, but the tourists who every year seem to be discovering our fine city in greater and greater numbers.

Cruise passengers and lifelong Triestini fill the bustling piazzas with a parade of diverse looks, whether they’re headed for a tour of Castello San Giusto, aperitivo at Cemut, a spritz at Caffe’ degli Specchi, a gathering of old friends at Trattoria da Giovanni – or simply on their way home from work. We love seeing a little more color, a little more swing in skirts and dresses, and a little more skin. And of course, with warmer and sunnier days we are reminded of an age-old infallible rule of fashion – everyone looks a little bit cooler with sunglasses.

I’m originally from California, but I moved here from New York four years ago for work, and also for a change of pace. The biggest difference between Italy and the US is that Italian culture is all about tradition, and preserving heritage, while Americans are all about what is new, and innovative. I look forward to going home, and I also look forward to coming back to Italy.
