This September, art enthusiasts and creative individuals are invited to immerse themselves in the world of sculpture at the Portopiccolo Art Gallery. On September 7 and 8, the gallery will host an experiential workshop that delves into the art of modeling, inspired by the works of Marcello Mascherini, a prominent figure in 20th-century sculpture.
The workshop is part of the lead-up to the 10th edition of “The Energy of Places: Wind and Stone Festival / Karst Polyphony,” a celebrated event that merges art, nature, and culture. Curated by Alessandra Spigai, a multidisciplinary artist renowned for her transformative and visionary work, the workshop offers a hands-on opportunity to explore the techniques and creativity that define Mascherini’s renowned sculptures.
“These two days will be an intense journey,” says Spigai. “Participants will discover the evolution of modeling art, from its ancient beginnings with clay to its modern expressions, culminating in the contemporary works of Marcello Mascherini.”
The workshop will run from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM and from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM each day. Attendees will engage in creating their own sculptural pieces, guided by Spigai’s expertise and inspiration from Mascherini’s work, which is currently showcased in the exhibition “Marcello Mascherini – Sculpture as Poetry” at the Portopiccolo Art Gallery.
In addition to the workshop, on September 7 from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM, there will be a special guided tour of Mascherini’s House Atelier in nearby Sistiana. The tour, led by Francesco and Leonardo Bordin, will include a screening of the 1969 documentary “Marcello Mascherini,” featuring direction and photography by Mario Volpi, musical contributions by Lorenzo Peratoner, and artistic collaboration by Giorgio Sestan.
Mascherini, born in Udine in 1906, is celebrated for his innovative contributions to sculpture. His early training during World War I in Isernia, followed by studies in Trieste and exhibitions in major art venues like the Venice Biennale, established him as a significant figure in modern art. His work, characterized by both stylized forms and dramatic, naturalistic tones in his later years, continues to inspire and influence.
The workshop is open to all creative individuals, and a minimum of six participants is required for the course to proceed. All materials will be provided by the organizers.
