Paolo Giovannini, a renowned sports photographer whose aerial shot of the Barcolana regatta in 2019 was hailed by CNN as one of the year’s best sports images, has been posthumously honored with a new photographic competition. The “Premio Fotografico Paolo Giovannini” seeks to celebrate his legacy while nurturing young talent in the field of sports photography.
Giovannini, who passed away on December 23, 2023, at the age of 52 after a prolonged battle with a heart condition, was celebrated for his dedication to both his craft and his commitment to mentoring emerging photographers. Known internationally for his work, Giovannini’s career spanned collaborations with notable entities including the Associated Press, Il Piccolo, and the Slovene-language daily Primorski dnevnik. In 2001, he also co-founded the sports daily Citysport.
The inaugural “Premio Fotografico Paolo Giovannini,” organized by the Associazione Amici di Paolo, aims to provide a platform for young photographers aged 18 to 30 residing in Friuli Venezia Giulia. The competition invites these aspiring photographers to submit sports-themed images by September 30 through a designated platform.

The submitted photographs will be evaluated by a distinguished panel of seven judges comprising photographers, experts, and journalists. The winner will be announced during Barcolana 2024, the regatta that Giovannini helped bring into the spotlight with his iconic image. Prizes for the competition include accreditation to photograph the 56th edition of Barcolana on October 13, a seat in a rubber dinghy to follow the regatta alongside professional photographers, and a three-month paid internship at the Wordpower communication agency, with which Giovannini had a longstanding collaboration.
This initiative not only honors Giovannini’s significant contributions to the field but also aims to inspire and guide the next generation of sports photographers. The competition’s launch was reported by ANSA FVG, highlighting the continued impact of Giovannini’s legacy on the world of photography.
For more information and to submit entries, young photographers can visit the Wordpower agency’s website, where further details about the competition are available.
