This weekend, the majestic Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia, one of Europe’s largest public squares, became a bustling hub of innovation and creativity as the 11th edition of “Maker Faire Trieste” kicked off. The event, dedicated to celebrating science, technology, and do-it-yourself creativity, brought together makers, innovators, and tech enthusiasts from across the region and beyond.

The festival, held annually in this historic city, opened with an official ceremony presided over by Mayor Roberto Dipiazza. The mayor, beaming with pride, addressed the attendees, describing the event as “a source of pride for the city” and praising its growth over the years. “This year,” he said, “Trieste once again confirms itself as a success, both in its scale and the quality of its participants.”

Maker Faire Trieste, co-organized by the Municipality of Trieste and the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), is a celebration of ingenuity, featuring a wide range of exhibitions, interactive workshops, and demonstrations designed to engage the public in the realms of science and technology. From 3D printing and robotics to sustainable energy solutions and digital craftsmanship, the event is a melting pot of ideas that inspires makers of all ages.

Coinciding with the 60th anniversary of the ICTP, this year’s fair holds special significance. Founded in 1964, the ICTP is a globally renowned institute dedicated to fostering scientific research, particularly in developing countries. The presence of ICTP underscores the fair’s commitment to merging local innovation with global scientific collaboration.

In its opening day alone, the fair showcased a diverse array of projects, from experimental prototypes to cutting-edge technologies. Participants wandered through a sea of booths, each one offering a unique glimpse into the future of science and engineering. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with everything from do-it-yourself drones and coding workshops for children to hands-on exhibits exploring artificial intelligence and sustainable farming solutions.

A highlight of the day was the Maker MFTS Awards, where outstanding contributions to the maker community were recognized. The event also honored Dr. Enrique Canessa, a leading physicist at ICTP who has been instrumental in co-organizing Maker Faire Trieste for over a decade. As Dr. Canessa retires this year, the Municipality of Trieste paid tribute to his pivotal role in fostering innovation in the city, awarding him a plaque and the City Seal.

The event, supported by the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, embodies Trieste’s long-standing tradition of scientific excellence. With its roots as a port city and crossroads of cultures, Trieste has evolved into a thriving center for scientific research and technological innovation. Maker Faire Trieste, now in its 11th year, reflects this transformation, serving as both a community festival and a platform for cutting-edge ideas.

As the fair continues into its second day on Sunday, September 1st, the atmosphere in Piazza dell’Unità remains vibrant. Families, students, hobbyists, and professionals are expected to explore a range of activities that blend education with entertainment. The event’s inclusive, hands-on nature has made it a key fixture in the city’s calendar, offering a rare opportunity for the public to engage directly with scientists, engineers, and creators.
