Authorities of Friuli Venezia Giulia have announced a temporary closure of a key coastal road, State Road 14 (S.R. n°14), on Thursday, September 5th, for essential pipeline maintenance. The closure, scheduled between midnight and 6 AM, is necessary to address urgent water supply concerns related to a major pipeline running beneath the scenic highway.
The planned work involves non-invasive testing on a section of the DN 900 pipeline near the coastal village of Grignano, just west of the historic city of Trieste. The pipeline is crucial to the region’s water distribution system, and the testing is intended to detect any leaks that could compromise service to thousands of residents. Officials describe the maintenance as “urgent and preparatory” and have emphasized that it cannot be delayed.
The closure will affect a 1.1-kilometer stretch of the road between Km 144+900 and Km 146+050. During this time, traffic will be suspended, and diversions will be set up to redirect vehicles to alternative routes.
Drivers traveling on the nearby NSA56 “di Sistiana” ramp towards Trieste will also encounter closures, with a section between Km 0+680 and Km 1+580 closed to public transit. Detours will be in place, and motorists are advised to follow local signage and plan for delays.
In addition to the direct road closures, several critical intersections along the highway will be monitored and signposted to warn drivers of the disruptions. These include the intersection at Km 136+720 near Sistiana, the junction with NSA56 at Km 137+900, and the intersection at Km 144+300 with Via Vitalba. Another key area at Km 147+600, known as Bivio di Miramare, will also see increased traffic management to ensure drivers are properly informed.
Officials from Friuli Venezia Giulia Strade, the regional authority responsible for road infrastructure, have reassured the public that the reopening of S.R. n°14 is anticipated for 6 AM, but they warned that the timeline could change depending on the progress of the pipeline testing. Any significant developments or early completion of the work will be communicated promptly to the public.
Local authorities have urged drivers to plan their routes carefully and avoid the affected areas during the closure hours. The work, conducted by the regional utility ACEGAS-APS-AMGA, is part of a broader effort to secure the region’s aging infrastructure amid growing concerns over water security.
This coastal stretch of State Road 14 is a lifeline for local commuters and tourists alike, serving as a gateway to some of the region’s most picturesque locales, including the cliffs of the Gulf of Trieste and the iconic Miramare Castle. The closure, though brief, highlights the increasing pressure on Italy’s infrastructure to adapt to both growing demand and environmental challenges.
