Authorities issued an “orange alert” for the entire region of Friuli Venezia Giulia as the threat of powerful storms and the potential for damaging storm surges looms. The warning, issued by the Civil Protection agency, comes as weather patterns show a rapidly developing storm front expected to impact the region starting Sunday evening.
The forecast predicts a combination of highly unstable, humid southern air arriving with the feared Libeccio wind—a strong southwestern wind notorious for causing dangerous conditions along coastal areas. The alert is set to be in effect from 6:00 PM on Sunday, September 8, until noon on Monday, September 9.
Meteorologists are concerned that the storm front will usher in intense thunderstorms, along with heavy downpours likely to escalate in the evening and into the early hours of Monday. Coastal areas may be particularly vulnerable, as sustained winds are forecast to intensify overnight, reaching hazardous levels. Storm surges are possible, with coastal cities preparing for significant disruption.
Residents have been advised to brace for deteriorating conditions, especially between 9:00 PM on Sunday and 6:00 AM on Monday, when the peak of the storm is expected. “Scattered showers may occur during the day on Sunday,” said the Civil Protection agency, “but the worst will come later in the evening, with heavy rains, local flooding, and strong winds continuing into Monday morning.”
Inland areas are also on alert as the southeast winds are expected to spread across the region, with gusts becoming particularly intense in the mountainous areas. Cooler, yet still unstable, northern air is expected to move into the area during the day on Monday, keeping the weather pattern unpredictable and stormy.
While Monday is forecast to see scattered thunderstorms and moderate rains across the region, the authorities are particularly concerned about the risks posed by flooding and high winds. Local emergency services are on standby, and residents in flood-prone areas are urged to take precautions.
“Be ready for disruptions,” warned the Civil Protection agency. “With the winds strengthening and the rains intensifying, we could see significant damage along the coast and possibly inland.”
As of now, the regional alert remains in effect until midday Monday, but further updates are expected as the storm approaches. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and heed all safety advisories.
