On a crisp September morning, the waters off the coast of Trieste bore witness to a quiet, solemn tradition. In honor of the “Day of Remembrance for Sailors Lost at Sea,” the Maritime Directorate of Trieste, in collaboration with the National Association of Italian Sailors, Trieste Group, held a poignant ceremony to pay tribute to those who never returned from the sea.
A patrol boat, its engine purring softly beneath the surface, served as the focal point of the event. From its deck, a wreath, lovingly prepared and adorned with fresh flowers, was cast into the gentle waves. This simple yet moving gesture has become an annual tradition, a symbol of remembrance for the countless sailors who perished while serving on Italy’s historic waterways and open seas.
The ceremony was attended by several local dignitaries, with Mayor Roberto Dipiazza standing at the helm of the delegation. “Our city’s history is inseparable from the sea. Today, we remember not just the sailors who vanished into the depths, but the families who still feel their absence,” Dipiazza said.
