As the new school year begins, the cultural landscape of Trieste is set to celebrate the life and legacy of Corrado Premuda, the esteemed journalist, writer, and educator who passed away suddenly in 2022. In his memory, Triestebookfest has launched the second edition of the “Corrado Premuda Contest for Essi”, an initiative aimed at inspiring the creative talents of local high school students.

Supported by the Pietro Pittini Foundation and in collaboration with the newspaper Il Piccolo, the contest invites students aged 15 to 18 from Trieste to submit original works – including articles, videos, photographs, or comics – that explore the relationship between humans and the environment. This theme echoes the focus of Triestebookfest’s recent edition, “What a Wonderful World!”, which highlighted the importance of harmonious coexistence with the natural world.

Entries are due by October 31, and participants are encouraged to accompany their creative submissions with a brief descriptive text. The contest’s goal is to foster reflection on humanity’s role within the broader ecosystem, raising awareness about the urgent need for mutual respect among all species on the planet.

The contest is open to individuals or groups, and the winners will be selected by a jury composed of members of Triestebookfest, journalists from Il Piccolo, and representatives of the Pittini Foundation. In addition to a 200-euro prize, winning entries will be published both in Il Piccolo and on the newspaper’s website, offering young creators a platform for their voices to be heard.

This initiative honors the life of Corrado Premuda, who was not only a distinguished writer but also a beloved teacher of Italian at the Ial vocational school in Trieste. Known for his passion for education, Premuda’s sudden passing on July 9, 2022, was a profound loss for the local community. Through the contest, Triestebookfest aims to keep Premuda’s spirit alive, particularly his devotion to teaching, writing, and his beloved hometown of Trieste.

“We want this contest to inspire the younger generation to reflect on the environment and our shared responsibility to protect it,” said a representative of Triestebookfest. “Corrado believed deeply in the power of words and ideas, and we hope to see that reflected in the submissions.”

The contest is free to enter, and in addition to the grand prize, the jury may select up to four other outstanding works from different categories. These works will also be published online and across Triestebookfest’s social media platforms.

For more information, interested students can contact the Triestebookfest team at triestebookfest@gmail.com or reach out to Angela Del Prete at 320-221-2039 via WhatsApp.

In a city that cherishes its cultural heritage, the Corrado Premuda Contest for Essi not only offers a meaningful opportunity for young artists but also keeps alive the memory of a man who left an indelible mark on Trieste’s literary and educational worlds.
