As the European Researchers’ Night draws near, Trieste is gearing up with a series of intriguing pre-event activities that offer a glimpse into the world of science and research. Scheduled for September 27 across numerous European cities, including Trieste, this annual event promises a vibrant exploration of scientific advancements and discoveries.
In the days leading up to the main event, Trieste residents and visitors will have the opportunity to engage with science in unconventional ways. The pre-event lineup kicks off on September 19 with CineRicerca, an initiative combining film and research. At 6:00 PM, the Mediateca of the Cappella Underground (Via Roma 19) will screen M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller Old (2021), presented in its original version with subtitles. The film, which follows a group of individuals aging rapidly on a remote beach, is linked to pharmaceutical research with its unexpected and controversial themes. Filippo Prencipe, a researcher from the University of Trieste’s Department of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, will offer insights into the film’s scientific relevance.
The excitement continues on September 20 at Pub El Bufo (Via Malcanton 4) with another event in the Sumo Science series. Starting at 7:00 PM, researchers will engage in a playful “battle” to defend their fields. This lively contest will feature Valerio Vitale from the University of Trieste, representing Materials Science, against Michele Libralato from the University of Udine, who will advocate for Environmental Technical Physics. Participants can enjoy a casual atmosphere with beers and snacks while delving into scientific debates.
On September 24, at 5:30 PM, the Urban Center will host a discussion titled “Dinosaurs and Much More”. This event will delve into recent research on the fossil ecosystem of Villaggio del Pescatore. A multidisciplinary team from the Universities of Bologna and Trieste, ISPRA, Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste, and Zoic srl has reexamined local fossils using innovative methods, yielding surprising new insights. One highlight includes the reconstruction of the complete blood vessel system of an 80-million-year-old dinosaur, Antonio, providing a deeper understanding of ancient species and their environments.
All events are free and open to the public, with no reservations required. Sharper Night in Trieste is organized by Immaginario Scientifico in collaboration with the Municipality of Trieste and local knowledge institutions.
