On Saturday, September 28, at 11:00 AM, Trieste’s historic Museo del Mare will open its doors to a new generation of curious minds with a special event tailored for primary school children. The free guided tour, held at the museum’s location in Magazzino 26 within the city’s Porto Vecchio district, promises to be more than just a casual weekend outing. It’s an educational adventure into the heart of maritime history, offering a glimpse into humanity’s relationship with the sea.

As part of the Passeggiando si impara (“Learning by Walking”) program, this initiative encourages children to engage actively with the world around them. Under the careful guidance of museum curator Silvia Pinna, young attendees will embark on a journey through time, tracing the evolution of sea travel from the earliest canoes to the towering ships of the great sailing age.

“Understanding the sea’s importance in history helps children appreciate how it shaped not only trade and exploration, but everyday life,” Pinna explained. Through hands-on exhibits and storytelling, she plans to immerse the group in the tools, traditions, and adventures of seafaring.

Limited to just 25 participants, the tour ensures a personal and interactive experience, with plenty of opportunities for questions and curiosity. For those interested in participating, reservations are required and must be made by noon on Friday, September 27, 2024. Reservations can be made via email at museomare@comune.trieste.it.

The Sea Museum, located in the heart of Trieste’s rejuvenated Porto Vivo, offers a vivid reminder of the city’s seafaring past. As one of Italy’s key maritime hubs, Trieste has long been a cultural and historical gateway to the Adriatic and beyond.

The event is free, further highlighting Trieste’s commitment to accessible educational opportunities for children. In a world where screen time increasingly replaces hands-on experiences, the tour offers a refreshing opportunity to learn by doing — or in this case, exploring.

For families eager to introduce their children to the wonders of maritime history, this is an unmissable event that promises to leave a lasting impression. After all, few places tell the story of human discovery and ambition quite like the sea.
