Civil Protection authorities in Italy’s Friuli Venezia Giulia region have issued a yellow alert, warning residents of severe weather conditions anticipated to hit parts of the region in the coming days. The advisory, set to be in place through Friday, September 27, foresees intense rainfall, powerful winds, and the possibility of storm surges along the coast.
According to meteorological forecasts, a large depression system currently over northwestern Europe is expected to descend toward northern Italy starting Thursday, bringing with it fast-moving and highly humid southwesterly winds. These weather patterns are likely to produce heavy rains, particularly in the Julian Prealps, with thunderstorms possible. The mountainous areas of the region, while facing significant rainfall, are expected to be less affected than nearby Veneto.
The potential for intense rain extends across much of the region, including the coastal areas. Strong southerly winds are predicted along the coastline, with the threat of storm surges being particularly severe between the towns of Lignano and Grado on Friday morning.
At higher altitudes, wind speeds are forecast to reach strong to near gale force from the southwest. Such conditions, the Civil Protection department warns, could lead to localized flooding in smaller rivers and urban drainage systems, landslides, road disruptions, and rising water levels in the Isonzo River. Coastal areas are also at risk of high waves and flooding from the sea.
Officials are urging the public to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay informed as the situation develops.
As the region prepares for the expected impact, local authorities are on standby to mitigate disruptions and ensure the safety of residents.
