In the shadow of the Barcolana, one of the world’s largest sailing regattas, a unique initiative is set to take place, one that sails not only through the waters but into the hearts of the city’s children.
The A.B.C. Association for Surgical Children of Burlo, a Trieste-based nonprofit, is hosting a series of creative workshops called “Sails without Barriers.” These free workshops, aimed at children between the ages of 6 and 13, will take place from October 8 to 11 in Piazza Unità d’Italia, and are designed to connect young participants with hospitalized children through the power of art and compassion.
During the workshops, children will create marine-themed crafts—boats, sails, and waves—using bright colors and decorations. These items, along with handwritten messages of support, will be donated to young patients at Burlo Garofolo Children’s Hospital. The messages will ultimately be assembled into a symbolic sailboat, a gesture meant to convey solidarity and hope for those undergoing medical treatment.
Psychologists from A.B.C. will help participants explore themes of inclusion and emotional strength through art, fostering empathy and understanding between healthy children and those in the hospital. For the children in treatment, these small creations will serve as a reminder that they are not alone.
Founded in 2005 by two parents who navigated a long and difficult surgical journey for their own child, A.B.C. has since grown into a crucial support system for families facing complex pediatric treatments. The nonprofit provides emotional and psychological support to families both during and after hospitalization, in addition to donating specialized equipment to the hospital and supporting medical research.
A Community of Support
“Sails without Barriers” is about more than just creating art—it’s about creating a sense of community. For the children attending the workshops, it’s an opportunity to show their support for peers they may never meet, but whose struggles they can begin to understand.
For those interested, the workshops will be open to school groups and individual children. Group sessions will take place each morning, while afternoon sessions on Thursday and Friday will be available for individuals. Registrations can be made through A.B.C.’s website or via email at info@abcburlo.it.
As the Barcolana fills the waters off Trieste with colorful sails, the handmade sailboat filled with messages of hope will carry with it the heartfelt support of a city that understands the importance of lifting each other up in times of need.
