Residents of Trieste are being advised to prepare for traffic disruptions this weekend as the city becomes the backdrop for the filming of Toyota Yaris Rally, a new production by Inside Man Films for Sky Sport. The high-profile shoot will take place on Saturday, September 28, and Sunday, September 29, in various parts of the city’s historic Porto Vecchio district, with the city’s government announcing a series of traffic measures to accommodate the event.
In a statement released earlier this week, the City of Trieste confirmed that the filming will prompt road closures, parking restrictions, and temporary traffic suspensions to ensure the safety and logistics of the shoot. The measures, listed under Ordinance No. 988-24, will come into effect on Friday, September 27, and last through Sunday.
The Disruption: What to Expect
Starting Friday evening, no parking or stopping will be permitted within the Porto Vecchio / Porto Vivo area, specifically in the square adjacent to Warehouse No. 28. These restrictions will remain in place until 11 a.m. on Sunday, September 29. Any vehicles violating this ordinance will be removed by city authorities.
In addition, vehicular traffic within the Porto Vecchio district will be suspended from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday. During this time, only public transport vehicles will be allowed to pass through designated areas, with specific provisions made for emergency and law enforcement vehicles.
Filming will also necessitate temporary “stop and go” suspensions of both vehicular and pedestrian traffic, lasting three to five minutes at a time. These suspensions will take place throughout the weekend, starting as early as 8 a.m. on Saturday and concluding by 11 a.m. on Sunday. The affected areas include the roadway between Viale Miramare, Largo Città di Santos, and the Hydrodynamic Central, as well as parts of the waterfront adjacent to Warehouse No. 116.
City on Hold
For local commuters, the disruptions extend beyond the Porto Vecchio area. On Saturday, no parking will be allowed in Largo Città di Santos, one of the city’s key junctions, until Sunday at midnight. Several access roads leading into the area will also be closed off, rerouting traffic through other parts of the city.
Public transport services, including buses operated by TPLFVG Scral, will continue to run throughout the weekend, with minor delays expected as vehicles maneuver around the filming set. Temporary exemptions will also be made for police and emergency vehicles, which will maintain their normal operations.
Anticipating the Action
The filming of Toyota Yaris Rally, a branded content production, is part of a growing trend in Trieste, where the city has become a favored location for international film crews. The rugged, industrial setting of Porto Vecchio, a former shipping hub, offers filmmakers a visually striking backdrop, attracting productions ranging from independent films to major network projects.
Trieste Mayor Roberto Dipiazza expressed enthusiasm for the shoot, highlighting the economic benefits of welcoming international productions to the city. “Trieste has established itself as a cinematic destination,” Dipiazza said in a statement. “While there will be some temporary inconveniences, the long-term rewards for the city are significant.”
Local authorities have advised residents to plan their travel accordingly, warning that additional traffic delays and changes to parking regulations could be announced in the coming days. Law enforcement officials will be on site throughout the weekend to manage the disruptions and ensure the smooth flow of traffic where possible.
