As the world prepares to observe the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25, the Municipality of Trieste has issued a call for proposals aimed at raising awareness and addressing this critical issue. Local third-sector associations are invited to submit ideas for initiatives and events to commemorate the day, as part of the city’s ongoing efforts to combat gender-based violence.
Published on the Civic Network of Trieste, the call for proposals underscores the city’s commitment to empowering grassroots organizations in tackling one of the most pervasive and pressing global problems. “This is an opportunity for the community to come together, highlight the challenges, and propose solutions to end violence against women,” said a spokesperson from Trieste’s Equal Opportunities Office.
The initiatives will be selected by a committee tasked with evaluating submissions based on their alignment with the goals of the International Day and their potential impact on the community. “We encourage creative and meaningful proposals that can foster dialogue, awareness, and action,” the municipality emphasized in the announcement.
The deadline for submissions is October 4, 2024. Interested associations must submit their proposals to the Equal Opportunities Office via a certified email platform, PEC, at the address: comune.trieste@certgov.fvg.it.
This annual commemoration, which has been recognized globally since 1999, continues to play an important role in bringing attention to the physical, sexual, and psychological violence experienced by women around the world. Italy, where femicide and domestic violence have been pressing issues, has seen a growing number of public events, demonstrations, and educational programs in recent years, with both local governments and non-profit organizations taking part.
Trieste, known for its vibrant civic engagement, hopes to further solidify its role as a leading city in the fight for gender equality and against violence in all its forms. For further details, those interested can contact the Equal Opportunities Secretariat at segreteria.cpo@comune.trieste.it.
This year’s observance comes at a time when many European countries are grappling with the need for stronger protections for women. The initiative in Trieste serves as a reminder that, even in quieter corners of the continent, the fight for women’s rights and safety remains a pressing concern.
