As Trieste gears up for the 56th edition of its internationally renowned sailing event, the Barcolana Autumn Cup, city officials have announced a series of significant traffic measures to accommodate the influx of visitors and ensure the smooth running of the regatta.
The annual Barcolana, taking place from October 4 to 13, is expected to draw thousands of sailing enthusiasts and tourists to the northern Italian city. With the event’s growing scale, the Municipality of Trieste has implemented strict road closures, parking bans, and adjusted traffic patterns throughout the city, effective until mid-October. The measures, outlined in Ordinance No. 1003-24, aim to ease congestion and prioritize public safety.
Major Road Closures and Parking Bans
Several key thoroughfares near the waterfront will be off-limits to vehicles. Among the most prominent closures are the “Rive Triestine,” a popular cycling route along the coastline, which will be inaccessible to bicycles and electric mobility devices until October 18.
Parking bans will be enforced across various parts of the city, including Viale Miramare and Via dell’Orologio, affecting popular tourist spots and business districts. The ordinance mandates vehicle removal where restrictions are not already in place. This includes stretches of Via Genova, a central street that connects Piazza del Ponterosso to the city’s iconic Molo Dei Bersaglieri pier.
In addition to this, starting on October 12, the waterfront promenade from Riva Del Mandracchio to Riva Tre Novembre will see vehicular access restricted, particularly during the regatta’s peak periods on October 13. This affects local residents and tourists, especially near Piazza Nicolò Tommaseo, one of the most scenic gathering points for spectators.
One-Way Traffic and Timed Restrictions
A series of one-way traffic regulations will also be in effect on Sunday, October 13, impacting the Strada Del Friuli, a vital route connecting the city to Prosecco village. This will likely lead to detours and traffic delays, particularly for those traveling between the coastal areas and the Karst highlands.
Additional restrictions will be enforced from October 12 to 13, particularly overnight. Streets such as Via Armando Diaz, Via Luigi Cadorna, and Via Di Cavana will be completely closed to traffic and parking, as they transform into pedestrian-only zones for festival-goers and visitors attending the weekend’s events. These closures will last until the early hours of October 13.
Parking Exemptions and Public Transport
The city has, however, offered some reprieve to residents and visitors using public transportation. Special exemptions will be made for those participating in the “Park & Bus Barcolana” initiative, which provides shuttle services to key regatta viewing areas. These exemptions also apply to designated parking areas for disabled persons and electric vehicle charging stations.
“With tens of thousands of spectators expected, it is crucial to ensure safety and smooth traffic flow while accommodating the needs of both residents and visitors,” said a city spokesperson.
City officials advise the public to plan accordingly, as changes to traffic patterns could cause delays, particularly in the city center and waterfront areas. The full list of regulations will remain in effect until the conclusion of the regatta on October 13, with some restrictions extending as late as October 18.
The Barcolana Regatta, first held in 1969, has grown into one of the largest sailing races in the world, attracting competitors from across the globe. The event culminates in a massive race in the Gulf of Trieste, followed by a week of cultural and sporting events, making it a highlight of the European sailing calendar.
