The 39th edition of the Ibero-Latin American Film Festival in Trieste will take place from October 13 to 20, 2024, with a special focus on anniversaries and social themes.

The festival, known for highlighting Latin American cinema and culture, will present the prestigious Allende Award to Greek-French filmmaker Costa-Gavras for his contributions to political and social justice through film. Gavras, best known for Missing (1982) and L’Amerikano (1973), will hold a Lectio Magistralis following the screening of Missing on October 18.

This year’s program emphasizes the struggles and stories of women and adolescents in urban and indigenous settings, as well as the challenges of Latin American peripheral communities. Special screenings include a tribute to Vlasta Lah, the first female director in Argentine cinema, and a rare showing of Fernando Birri’s controversial 1968 film ORG.

Among the anniversaries, the festival will honor two iconic figures: Frida Kahlo, 70 years after her death, and Luca Prodan, the Italian rocker who transformed Argentine music. A series of films will explore Kahlo’s life and legacy, while a documentary on Prodan will reflect on his final days with the band Sumo.

The event will also showcase the cinematic connections between Italy and Latin America through films like Uma gôndola para Nova Veneza, a Brazilian documentary on the lasting ties between Italian immigrants and their descendants.

As part of its continued partnership with Ventana Sur, the festival will present four award-winning Latin American films that have already made their mark at international festivals, including the Mexican film No nos moverán and the Costa Rican-Spanish co-production Memories of a Burning Body.
